If you listen closely near the airport, you might hear more than the sound of aircraft engines
preparing for takeoff. In spring of 2026, the Portage Day Care Centre at Southport will
be launching something just as exciting, an expansion that will welcome more young
passengers onto the runway of learning, play, and discovery.
Originally built to accommodate 28 children, the day care will soon expand to 52 licensed spaces,
including eight dedicated infant spots. The project will add 24 new day care spaces, helping meet the
growing demand from families who live and work at Southport and throughout the surrounding region.
Construction is expected to begin this spring, with completion anticipated later this year.

This expansion is made possible through the Province of Manitoba’s Day Care
Renovation Expansion Grant, which awarded Portage Day Care $2 million
A to licensed, non-profit centres to renovate facilities and create new infant or

to support the project. The provincial initiative provides one-time funding
preschool spaces, helping communities expand access to quality child care.
The expansion is about much more than bricks, mortar, and square footage. It
represents an investment in families, in working parents, and in the future of the
Southport community itself.
